Anxious People by Fredrik Backman: Book Review

A People Book of the Week, Book of the Month Club selection, and Best of Fall in Good Housekeeping, PopSugar, The Washington Post, New York Post, Shondaland, CNN, and more! Image source: Amazon.com
A few years back, when I read A Man Called Ove, I fell in love with the Ove character and the straightforward yet effective narrative Backamn spun. One of my friends advised me to pick up Anxious People quite some time ago; when I got it as a Christmas gift, I promptly ranked it first on my TBR and am pretty happy I did!

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman is a fascinating read. It depicts the tale of a group of individuals who had planned to spend their day visiting apartments when they were unexpectedly held hostage.

However, there is much more to these folks than the fact that they all happened to be in one apartment on the same day.

Anxious People: Plot: 4.5/5

While Anxious People might not have the most grandiose or complex narrative, it does have one of the greatest tales I’ve read.

Backman’s ability to convey a tale is characterized by carefully constructed plotlines, logical twists, and a great deal of thinking rather than spectacular settings and heart-racing action.

Essentially, as I previously said, one day a parent who thinks they are failing goes to steal a bank, but when they realize it is not a bank with any actual cash, they flee over to the flat opposite.

However, they end themselves in the midst of an apartment showing, which immediately becomes known as a “hostage situation”.

Everyone in the flat has a unique and authentic tale to share. They all have very diverse backgrounds and contribute something fresh to the overall plot.

In this one room, we learn about everyone and what led them here today. This reveals Backman’s very finest quality: his unequaled ability to express some of the most complicated human emotions in the simplest of ways.

The book is called Anxious People, so we’re out here learning about all kinds of various varieties of anxiety without even realizing it because one of these backstories will apply to everyone of us who reads this.

Two police officers are searching for the robber who failed to leave the residence. (Just to create some interest.)

Anxious People: Characters: 5/5

All I can say is that Fredrik Backman can write human beings. However, in order to keep this part short, let me elaborate.

Backman includes a great number of primary characters in Anxious People, and by the conclusion of the novel, you’ll wonder who the main protagonist was all along. This demonstrates Backman’s ability to create a whole ensemble of excellent characters.

We have Zara, who is a bit of a b*tch to most people, but we learn about her past and why she is the way she is.

We also find that she is participating in treatment and has unwittingly found the one therapist that seems to understand her.

We have two police officers who are themselves a father and son who have had tragedy in the past, and the father just wants to be a decent parent, while the son wants his father to understand that he does not need to keep trying so hard.

We have a couple who are pregnant together and are discussing real, true problems that soon-to-be parents are likely to face together.

There are many others, all of which are as intriguing. They will all make you feel something, which is Backman’s superpower.

Anxious People: Final Rating: 4.75

Anxious People may already be my favorite book of the year. Backman has a remarkable talent for writing the wisest things in the most ridiculous manner. He makes emotions, concerns, and grownup challenges approachable by discussing, applying, and experiencing them with his characters. He expertly blends these profound and moving moments with comedy.

If you’ve heard of Backman and have been wanting to read one of his works, start with Anxious People. It combines heart, comedy, and an insightful tale to produce one of the greatest novels I’ve ever read.
